A thrill – of course – but not only…
The second major attraction which brought the fisherman’s village of Gansbaai to worldwide attention is to be experienced about three km offshore. Dyer Island is an ornithological nature reserve for many species of marine birds, among which a colony of 7000 Jackass Penguins. Geyser Rock, close by, is the home for a permanent colony of 30 to 40 thousand Cape Fur Seals. The channel in between both islands is renowned round the globe as “Shark Alley” – the best place in the world to observe, encounter and dive with the Great White Shark.
Our local boat operators offer a wide variety of tours from boat based shark watching to thrilling cage diving experiences.
However, for many people this activity might provide an utterly interesting and most unexpected insight of this vastly misunderstood creature.

Ganz anders als im Film!
Die zweite große Attraktion, die den Fischerort Gansbaai zu Weltruf gebracht hat, kann etwa drei km von der Küste entfernt entdeckt werden.
Dyer Island ist ein ornithologisches Naturschutzgebiet für vielfältige Arten von Seevögeln, darunter eine Kolonie von über 7.000 so genannter ‘Jackass’ Pinguine. Die benachbarte Felseninsel ‘Geyser Rock’ hingegen ist Heimat für eine ständige Kolonie von 30 bis 40 Tausend so genannter ‘Cape Fur’ Seehunde und -löwen.
Der Kanal zwischen den Inseln ist über den Globus hinweg als ‘Shark Alley’ bekannt – die Allee der Haie ist der weltweit beste Ort, um den Großen Weißen Hai zu beobachten oder mit ihm zu tauchen. Die örtlichen Bootsbeteiber haben sich auf unterschiedliche Touren spezialisiert. Sie bieten einfache bootsgestützte Haibeobachtung bis hin zum spannenden Erlebnis des Cage Diving, bei dem der Taucher in einem sicheren Stahlkäfig den Haien Auge in Auge begegnet.
